I am, like many Aussies, especially those of us on low incomes and/or with chronic illness or disability, just trying not to think too much about last night's federal budget. It's bad. And not justified unless you are sold on the moral position of right wing libertarianism in which case please leave my page immediately.

The cutbacks and changes are also thin-edge-of-the-wedge ones.

~~~
So anyhoo, my thoughts are turning to how to manage both financially and psychologically, because nothing fucks people up more than hardship... with stigma and shame attached. Thoughts are also turning to how to convince people to vote these bastards out ASAP. It might be time to put together crib sheets so that on the occasions I encounter demoralised or politically naive folk I have facts in my head (with references). Also useful for genuine right wingers, although I choose my company pretty carefully these days.
What's going on at that topic in Australia?
You don't hear much about their economical and state situation in the outside world. (Guess that's due to the land being far away from all the other "important" political and economical hemispheres.)
My head might explode if I try and fill you in (and I have just switched to the Dvorak keyboard layout so am already in danger of combustion).
Have a couple of links:
A summary
An opinion about why its priorities are wrong
And there is also some debate about whether our economy was in such a bad way or whether this simply reflects Coalition idealogy. One view from overseas.
The generic measures seem familiar...
I don't know, it seems like a disease all around the world. Cutting budgets for the less fortuned, cutting of support of basic needs which keep societies together and from civil war, no touching of those ones who could not be interested because if they own a million more or less it shouldn't harm their life standard and destruction of all that ensured peace over decades (which mankind fought so hard for).
I have stopped having words for that.
Oh, let's just call it "class warfare" and be done with it.
I cannot type what I think of the damned budget or my computer will catch fire.
I don't know how we're going to survive, I really don't.
I looked at your links and I swear that your government is taking lessons from Spain's gov. The very same atrocities (yes, they are just that) are happening here with our very own right wing gov in charge. What's worse that people have become so apathetic because they figure that fighting it all won't work that they're likely to win another term out of sheer inertia.
I choose my own company carefully these days as well.
Yes, apathy arises from effective brutality.
You are the best sort of company to have, btw. :)
Thank you, dear. I do appreciate that. Many people don't think an American can be of the liberal, left wing even, school of thought.
I've also lived most of life here in Spain and am married to a man whose father was one of the founding members of the Spanish Communist party (more like socialists here than communists, though)...lots of factors have contributed to my political views. I also had a mother who was wheel chair bound for almost 20 years and just seeing how awful it was getting extra help for her without going bankrupt was enough to make me very angry about the lack of social aid for those most in need in the US.
But I ramble...
It's been happening here too.
The Tories have created a blame culture and all too often the blame is being heaped on folks with disabilities.
Yep, Australia is finally moving in lockstep with the UK and US. I'm sooooo proud of my adopted country.... NOT! /exploding sarcasm
