Seven Fears A-Phobing.

1. I have a phobia about heights.

2. I used to have a phobia about spiders, but that's now nothing more than sudden alarm, followed by wariness, when I encounter some of the ones we have in this part of the world. We do have some particularly creepy ones here, so it's quite reasonable. But in terms of full blown phobia, it's as though one day the phobia just scuttled from arachnids to being in high places.

3. I have an entirely unsurprising fear about my legs breaking for no apparent reason. This actually happened. I have thighs of steel so it's unlikely to happen again but even so, I carry my mobile phone with me whenever I'm on my own.

4. I have a profound fear of being lied to and manipulated by lovers and particular types of friends. It's possibly not so much a fear, as an expectation. As though I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop, and the sense of anticipation can get really oppressive. It is the lasting legacy of my marriage and my involvement with a particular clique.

5. I am frightened by fatigue, and frightened by situations where I may not be able to manage my fatigue.

6. Being responsible for other people. Yeah, really nervous about this one.

7. Quitting smoking. The shit you can say to people when you're in the process...oh lord.

Those are very logical fears given the circumstances. And yeah, you Aussies have to deal with some mighty scary arachnids!

Funnily enough, spiders don't bother me so much (we had the dreaded redbacks in Adelaide) but snakes give me the heebie jeebies!

I can see why your physical condition would give rise to many fears of being stuck in a place with no-one to help you. My husband's mother was wheelchair bound after breaking her neck in a boat accident and she feared being burned to death in her bed, as she needed a lift plus a person to operate it to get out of bed, then she lived on the third floor and could not use stairs. The thought of that helplessness terrified her.

I've never smoked myself, but have been around when The Swede's youngest daughter gave up the habit and she was vile (she's pretty mouthy at the best of times, but this added a level of snark that even surpassed my own!) We took it in our stride, though, so I hope the same happens for you.
