I've been watching ants.

No really, there's a next swarming in the letterbox. We have a brick fence with a big pile o'bricks that contains the actual boxes, and I noticed a whole bunch of ants in mine. Then I realised there were ants everywhere - they've got their nest in the grout of the bricks.

And because they're swarming, some of them have grown wings. It's really quite impressive.

OoooO, sounds like we might be in for some rain if they're swarming like that.

I love insects, they are such fascinating things.

Wings means its mating season. Those are all contestants in the grand stage of life for ants, finding a suitable inseminator and starting a new colony if fate permits.

Did you know that the combined weight of all the ants in the world would exceed the combined weight of all the humans in the world - all 7.3 billion of us. They are the most successful of all the species on the planet - according to E.O. Wilson, an ant expert of international fame.
