Bored now. I need a new hobby. It needs to get me properly distracted in the evenings.

It needs to make sense, it needs to feel like it matters rather than just being a distraction.

Ideally, I should need to pull myself away from it, rather than push myself into it.

I totally misread this as you needing a new hubby to keep you distracted in the evenings.

Ahem.

What's wrong with your current hobbies - feeling like they don't matter?=

Well, something like that would be nice, but probably not an entire hubby. And I'd wear it out if I was using it all the time.

ATM, I'm getting through enough of the various things that either need doing, or that I want to do (like creative stuff), that I wonder what else to do. All of my interests have been, of necessity, pickup/putdown activities, like craft stuff, which is only satisfying up to a certain point. Internally driven.

Stir crazy, but not so sick I just have to lie there and live with it.

How about video games? There are lots of different kinds to choose from - including ones you can play with other people if you want to be social. Personally I like ones that have a strong story (roleplaying and adventure games).

They really don't do it for me, unfortunately. Feels too much like I'm just killing time. I think I'm looking for stuff that is about helpign the world.

I have just spent a few minutes on the Amnesty site, signing petitions. Next time, I'll be sending emails. And as soon as I can get this bloody pooter to talk to my printer, I'll be writing letters as well. So that's a start.

If I do ever get well enough, it'll be ESL tutoring for me. But I'm not quite there yet.

Makes sense! In that case you might also like to check out some Citizen Science projects: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_science

Would it make sense to pick up a bit of language practice then? Or read up on ESL teaching methods?

Beer sort of fits all that for me...

Wikipedia always needs more volunteer editors. I second the citizen science option. Check out the Atlas of Living Australia (I think that's what it's called). They get volunteers to record local sightings of various fauna and flora.

I've contemplated becoming a serial complainer to the TGA, a la Ken Harvey, dobbing in all the dodgy alt med crap out there. Since they're so crap at regulating and only bother looking at things if a complaint is made, perhaps if they got enough complaints they'd get their shit together.

I do know what you mean about being an unreliable volunteer. Very frustrating to me as well. Are you reasonably competent with phones? They can often use people to make calls. And paperwork, sometimes. I cannot lift earthquake rubble off of trapped people, but I can a) tell other rescuers how to do it without anyone getting more hurt, or b) fill out the paperwork.
