Medical Update.

I, however, am feeling woozy. I was going to say it was inexplicable, but I have thought further and it probably is not. It could be anaemia (although this is not yet confirmed - only that my iron stores are low), or more likely it's because three days ago I dropped my prednisolone dose from 7mgs to 6.5 mgs, which is lower than it ever gets to. I am having other symptoms that go with prednisolone withdrawal, so this makes sense.

In spite of the discomfort I'm feeling quite celebratory, as I am moving into uncharted territory with my prednisolone reduction. Maybe one day I will get to know what I am like without prednisolone in my system! I have been on it constantly since my mid 20's, and it has so many far reaching and obscure effects, including effects on personality and psychiatric function, that I am very curious to know how I will feel without it. If I can go that far.

Five milligrams is the amount that is estimated to be the physiological replacement dose (the amount that makes up for the cortisol that your body produced naturally, and that one's body most likely does not produce once one has been on prednisolone for any length of time). However, on the rare occasions in the past that I've gotten briefly below 7mgs (possibly only once, and only for a week or two), I've observed changes in my metabolism, so I suspect for me the physiological dose is a tad higher than 5mgs. It is possible that my adrenal glands won't kick back in and start working, in which case I'm probably almost as low as I can go, as you cannot live without cortisol. If all goes well, I'll drop to 6 mgs in a couple of weeks.

This is really exciting! (Yes, I know it isn't. But yes, yes it is!)

It is exciting! I've only got a three-year history on it and have recently got to my lowest daily dose of 10mg. And I'm also excited :) I assume you're talking daily, right?

I just got below 5mg for the first time in the couple of years I've been on it, too.

I switched things around so I'm only going down by 0.25mg at a time though - going down by 0.5mg was too much of a strain and lead to me feeling utterly cruddy. Luckily my pharmacy is happy to do "a quarter of a tablet" although it's rather more like crumbs and dust by that stage...

Yes, mast cell stuff. Mast cell reaction is triggered differently to an allergy but once it's going it's basically a drawn-out allergy reaction so steroids are very helpful.
