Possum Yarn.

Quick link about possum yarn:

Merino possum

At this point, you should probably know that the possum is a introduced pest in New Zealand, and causes terrible environmental damage. Which is why they have a possum fur and yarn industry and we don't have one here. Over here, possums are protected, and if anything, are on the back foot due to the predations of domestic pets and the constant expanding of suburbia. It's all about context.

Frankly at the moment I'd consider strapping live Australian possums to my feet if it would keep them warmer (the feet that is).

Awesome! It would be like having furry, scurrying roller skates on, except for the bit where it wouldn't really be like that at all.

But it wouldn't be hell on wheels.

Having lived on a farm I can sympathise with the NZ attitude towards possums. I also consider rabbits to be a low form of vermin, only slightly lower than those who keep them as pets.

I do feel that way about possums when they get through the net and eat my apricots. Otherwise, I'm a happy-love-the-cuteness city dweller.

On the other hand - rabbits *are* tasty.

The only drawback to the stuff is that it is not particularly hardwearing. What you tend to find is that the weaker fur tends to wear off the merino or other fibre core of the yarn with use (particularly hat heel/toe points on socks, elbows of jerseys, etc.)

I'd like to see people start weaving the stuff, rather than knitting it, as that may produce a better fabric for more strenuous use.

These blankets are the only woven products that are popping up.

Awfully tempting, I must say. Although possibly they work as blankets precisely because they don't need to be hard-wearing.

Of those, three of the blanket types are knits, only the 'natural' is a weave, unfortunately. And it's got nylon in it, so I probably wouldn't bother buying it to cut up for making clothing.

I appreciate the explanation about possums being pests in NZ. It really is all about context.
